Watch The Emergency West Wheelstander Perform At Great Lakes Dragaway

Watch The Emergency West Wheelstander Perform At Great Lakes Dragaway

There have been dozens and dozens of notable wheel standers in the annals of drag racing but few of them were as BangShifty cool as the Emergency West wheelstander. We’re talking about a 1977 Chevy dually crew-cab truck with a pair of blown big block Chevy engines mounted damned near on the tailgate. Even more wacky is the fact that the owner/operator Richard Schroder actually ran the thing with dually truck tires on it! Pay close attention to this video and you will see that there are two tires on each side of the rear axle of this truck. How completely radical is that?!

Like the Cool Bus and other very LONG wheel standers their really have a presence about them when they stand up. Not that there isn’t something cool about a short wheelbase, fast wheelstander but these long ones, the machines that appear like a motorized building lumbering down the track just have a chutzpah about them that cannot be described. Schroeder was a wheelie master for decades and he ran several successful machines in the genre before he passed away several years ago now.

The second part of the show on this truck was the fact that the engines would shoot copious fire out of the headers and at night Schroeder would run the truck with the lights off at the track. The sparks were flying, the flashing lights were blazing, and the huge truck was lumbering down the track.

Showmanship comes in many forms and for Richard Schroeder that form was one monster of a 1977 Chevy truck!

Incidentally there is a new version of this truck with a late model body on it, twin blown 502 engines and the same great look being run by Schroeder’s son.
