2012 Run to the Shore – Start Stop Squared Action Gallery

(Photos by Dave Nutting) – The great photos keep on coming from the 2012 Run to the Shore. This time we’re focused on the “Start Stop Squared” event which was held to cap off the event on Saturday afternoon. If you are familiar with SCCA Pro Solo, than you know what the magic is here. Basically, two cars launch off on mirror image courses and like a drag race, one car stays and the other car is eliminated. In this case, the course was setup as follows: Both cars launched off like a drag race (street race style start) and at the end of a roughly 400ft course they made 90-degree turns heading into a slalom course that ended up with a “stop box” that tested the car’s binders.

A shootout was held at the end of the day with the top 16 cars that had done the best on the autocross and road course. Just like a normal heads up drag race, it was a single elimination exercise. As you’ll see in Dave’s photos, this was a pretty bad ass test for all the competitors. Dig how each car looks differently when on the stoppers hard and how they look coming through the 90-degree turn and slalom cones.

The winner of this deal was Billy Utley in his Nova but it was no cake walk. Tom Farrington’s 1966 Chevelle chased him right to the end, but Farrington’s big ’66 pushed about a foot through the stop box and disqualified his run. They were two of the coolest cars at the event so it was really bitchin’ to see them slug it out to close the day!

Thanks again to Dave Nutting for the boss photos. Hit the link below to see them!
