What was supposed to be an awesome day of Modern Street Hemi Shootout racing on Friday turned into Mother Nature’s temper tantrum. Shortly after qualification runs started, the clouds rolled in. Then the first drop or two hit. The next thing you know, it’s hailing…something that Beech Bend’s track announcer could not remember happening, and he remembers the time a tornado crossed the far end of the track! Halfway through the storm the race was called for the day, much to the disappointment of everybody who was looking forward to making some runs, and by the time cars were being loaded onto trailers and people were heading back to the Holiday Inn, the sun broke out. At that point, the focus shifted to the car show and the fun that ChallengerFest is known for. There are plenty of awesome rides in the lot, and more cars had arrived for a diverse mix of late-model Mopars in the parking lot. There were pure show cars, cars from the track that got a quick clean-up, full-on race cars and daily beaters…well, at least the one that we brought, for sure! With barbecue provided by JJ&M On The Road Bar-B-Que and enough good spirits floating around (and sitting cold in coolers, if you knew who to ask), even the quickly chilling temperatures didn’t deter owners and spectators from coming out and enjoying the evening.
