Corvette Coverage: Mystery Car Unveiled! And It Is…

The silver cover draped over the shell of a car that I could not figure out. One guy got booted out of the museum the day before yesterday for trying to take a peek. The shape was kind of Corvette, kind of Viper-ish in the back and completely unknown. Yesterday afternoon they finally pulled the cover off of the car in front of a crowd so big that I couldn’t get a good photo of it, even at my height with my camera all the way above my head. Good thing the car is twenty years old.

The mystery car is the 1994 Guldstrand GS90. As the story goes, when the Corvette ZR-1 came out in 1990, Dick Guldstrand saw an opportunity to create his vision of the perfect Grand Sport ride, instead of his name just getting slapped onto another Chevrolet product. He asked GM for fifteen ZR-1’s and some money. He got one car and permission to do whatever he wanted to do with it. And that’s exactly what he did, since the only pieces to remain Corvette are the windshield, side windows and the entirety of the interior. The LT4 was cranked up to 475 horsepower with some help from D.K. Motorsports, and the suspension got a complete go-through from Guldstrand himself, including ditching the mono-leaf for coil-over shocks. Painted Nassau Blue with a white stripe, the Guldstrand GS90 was a looker and a runner (for 1994, 0-60 was in the low-four second range, and top speed was over 175mph). Unfortunately, the modifications brought the car to a price north of $200,000 and only six were ever made.

Seeing this car in person, you get hints of several different vehicles combined. The nose reminds you of a Dodge Stealth with the smoked headlight lenses. The tail has a Viper coupe shape to it but there are hints of TVR Cerbera with the taillights. You can’t miss the 1990’s Corvette interior.

So much for a new Corvette, but it’s cool to see one of these rare beasts make it’s way to Bowling Green to be shown off for the anniversary.

Bonus points: during one of the many seminars I listened to for a few minutes, a question was asked about a mid-engined Corvette. Oh, you should have heard the explosion come from that man. I didn’t catch all of it (I was on my way to the C7.R), but the premise was that they would rather build a $100,000 and under badass car than shift to mid-engined and sell a $200,000 car to eight people. Guess that answers that.
