(Words and photos by Scott Liggett) – The 27th Annual Kearney Cruise Nite’s Friday Night Kick-Off Party was the official start of the weekend festivities put on Central Nebraska Auto Club. But, it really started Wednesday night when more than 300 cars showed up to cruise to all the area retirement and assisted living homes, bringing the car show to the people who couldn’t go to the car show. Those residents really cheered and waved as the parade of classics, customs, hot rods, and muscle cars rolled by the front doors of their facilities.

The festivities continued Thursday night at Midway Chevrolet with a cruise in and barbecue. But, on Friday evening several hundred cars rolled into the parking lot of the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument. The Archway is a museum to the history of how the Platte River running across Nebraska served as the road way from the Native Americans of the great plains to the settlers moving along the Oregon Trail to the Transcontinental Railway right up to today as Interstate 80 runs nearly on top the Trail. It is a great place to stop to stretch those legs and learn a little history when travelling across the state.
