Cruise Photos: A Look At The Southern Knights Georgetown, Kentucky Cruise – Lots Of Clean Iron!

(Words and photos by Doug Gregory) – The Southern Knights of Central Kentucky is a small car club based in the bluegrass.  Their claim to fame is their yearly ‘Boonesborough Boogie Nationals’, a benefit rod run/car show that raises money many local charities.   This year this large show takes place in October.  Outside this one big event the club hosts monthly cruises in Georgetown, KY.  We’ve attended many of these in the past and enjoy not only the regulars show up, but also many new rides that come to check it out.   On virtually every weekend in Central Kentucky there are multiple cruises and its not uncommon for folks to visit more than one a day just to see who all is there and what is going on.  Sometimes these cruises start off with a lot of cars there and the scene will change through the event with many going and coming.  Some events start off with only a few cars and after a bit you look around and suddenly there seem to be a whole new set of cars waiting to tell their stories.  Stories are one of the biggest reasons we go to the events we do so we can hear the histories of the people and their machines.

We happened upon a great find at this event.  A white ’68 Cougar with nothing particularly special about it shows up looking used-car-lot fresh for a 1970 trade-in.  The owner was willed this machine by his uncle who bought it new and took care of it better than most.  There’s a notebook with what seems to be every receipt for anything ever that applied to the car.  It’s a 289, 3-speed on the floor car with few frills.  The original owner was a coal-miner and didn’t drive it a whole lot.  It has about 40,000 original miles on it.  After the nephew took ownership he had it repainted as the original finish was showing its age.  Other than that this car is un-restored and completely original.  Normally I’d suggest a number of upgrades, but given this car’s history and the legacy of high-quality maintenance it seems best left alone and enjoyed as the survivor it is.  One interesting thing I learned is that the little pedal above the headlight dimmer switch is the windshield washer pump which is pretty stinking cool.  This gallery might be a little small, but rest assured there were more cars there.  I am trying hard not to send in repeat photos of cars I see at other regional events so that we aren’t just posting up the same ole stuff and not centering around one make, model, genre, or venue.  If its cool and tasteful I’m taking a picture of it and trying to get the back-story of as many as I can.
