Cruisin’ Ocean City Event Coverage: A Wet And Fun Day On The Maryland Coast With A Ton Of Great Cars And Trucks

Cruisin’ Ocean City Event Coverage: A Wet And Fun Day On The Maryland Coast With A Ton Of Great Cars And Trucks

For more than 20 years, people have been gathering in the spring and fall with hot rods, trucks, muscle cars, and customs to pack the streets of Ocean City Maryland for the Cruisin’ Ocean City events. It is rare that I get to mix work and family but last weekend was a rare opportunity so the Lohnes clan jumped in the family truckster for a weekend of automotive fun, starting with a day at this show. As you will see, it was really, really wet but despite that there were still hundreds of awesome cars out and about. One can only imagine how absolutely huge this event is when the weather is nice. The local constabulary seems pretty tolerant of the cruising scene while the event is going on but we did see some people who were pulled over for acting like morons and with as many cars and people as there are out and about for this event, it only makes sense that the safety of the public is maintained. We have seen some photos of a wreck that occurred on Sunday where a nice first generation Camaro was mangled. We don’t know the circumstances but sure hope that everyone was OK.

The way the event is structured it interesting because there is a main show lot over by the beach and there is a convention center that is also home to lots of cars, but the coolest thing is the mini-shows that happen at restaurants, shopping areas, frozen custard stands, and whatever other business types you can dream up. The cars pack those lots and people can just roam the streets taking in all the fun. That’s what we did. Because of the rains, the “organized” areas of the show were all but empty so we took toe pounding the pavement and checking out the stuff in the lots along the road. It was a wet but fun day. The kids were excited to see so much cool stuff and it was nice to actually just walk around and gawk at cars. We have to thank Gary Gonce and Bobby Burris for telling us about the event and giving us the low down on how to make the best of it. We had a blast and left Ocean City in the middle of the afternoon to head back to the NJ hotel we were calling home base for the weekend because Sunday was already planned out for something the kids had been looking forward to since they first heard about it months ago. More on that later. Apologies on some of the photos, shooting in a rain storm freaked the lens out from time to time!

Shame the weather sucked on Saturday. The show registers over 2,000 cars, (I was #1932), and I would be willing to bet another 1,500 to 2,000 just show up. Also, the fall show is actually a bit smaller than the spring event. Friday and Sunday turned out nice.

There was a stretch of time where we went to OC every year. Then, one year I met Doug out at the Woodward Dream Cruise… now OC seems kinda small. Woodward is freaking huge!!! OC is cooler though because they don’t shut the streets down at 10:00. Nothing like something with a lot of cam burbling by the hotel room at 3:00 AM. I think the average car at OC is probably faster than the average car at Woodward.
