Kearney Cruise Night Coverage: The Scene From Downtown Kearney – Cool Town, Cool Cars

(Words and photos by Scott Liggett) – The 27th Annual Kearney Cruise Nite hosted by the Central Nebraska Auto Club was just getting started Wednesday night with a cruise to the local care homes, Thursday night BBQ at Midway Chevrolet, and Friday Night’s Kick Off Party at the Great Platte River Road Archway. Saturday morning was the start of the biggest day of the event.

Mother Nature gave the car show goers unusually cool temperatures, fog and drizzle, but that didn’t slow down the crowds at the Saturday Car Show on the The Bricks of downtown Kearney’s Central Avenue. More than 500 vehicles lined the cobble stone street of historic district. The great weather also brought out the spectators by the thousands to check out the cool rides, listen to the live band and hear the dragsters firing up their engines.
The car show was just the beginning of Saturday’s festivities. As the sun began to set the hot rodders jumped into their rides and Kearney Cruise Nite lived up it’s name. Hundreds and hundreds of people cruising like the old days of Van Nuys Blvd. The “Strip” was Kearney’s 25th St and it took your author more than an hour to each circuit.  Central Nebraska Car Club’s members put together an absolutely amazing event this year. But, if you think this is all that happened last weekend, you are so wrong. The local NHRA sanctioned 1/4 mile drag strip Kearney Raceway Park had racing Saturday and Sunday as well.
