Road Trippin With Doug and Taylor – A Look Back At A Spectacular Fall Cruise To A Natural Wonder In Kentucky

Road Trippin With Doug and Taylor – A Look Back At A Spectacular Fall Cruise To A Natural Wonder In Kentucky

(Words by Doug Gregory – Photos by Taylor and Doug Gregory) – The drive from Somerset to Cumberland Falls State Park is not terribly long, but at this time of year is incredibly beautiful.  Right now the fall colors are near peak in an explosion of gold, orange, red, and hundreds of variants of those hues.  The road does get a bit curvy and the elevation changes a lot.  The drive isn’t brutal or epic, but if you get car sick easily you might want to medicate first.  Cumberland Falls is the second-largest falls in America and is referred to as the ‘Southern Niagara’.  The falls are almost 70ft tall and 125ft wide.  There are high and low vantage points to view this wonder.  This is the only site in the Western hemisphere where a lunar rainbow (or moonbow) can be witnessed during a full moon with clear skies.

The first half of our drive up was uneventful and enjoyable as my son Taylor shot pictures of the cars both fore and aft of our place in line.  Once we turned off of Hwy 27 though, the car shut off and we coasted into a gravel driveway.  We had power under the hood, but none in the car.  A nice gentleman stopped to help and once I diagnosed the connectors going into the fuse block as the culprit the fix was quick and we were back on our way.  We felt time was against us as we wanted to rejoin the group at the falls.  I can say our car isn’t setup for autocrossing, but the front sway bar and disc brakes we added last year certainly got a workout.  Thanks CPP!  It’s pretty cool to pull into a state park and see mostly classics, muscle cars, and street rods filling the parking lot.

The sun was out so we could see a rainbow hovering right outside our reach.  Seemed like a perfect time of year to take in this amazing site.  When we finally departed a handful of cars were traveling with us so my son could get pictures of some actually traversing the twisty roads through the fall foliage.  Some ended up being this gorgeous, black-cherry ’55 Chevy and a super-sweet, maroon ’46 (I think) Ford Coupe.  There were no opportunities to pass or change our position so we got plenty pictures of these two.  Once back out on Hwy 27 we were again able to capture some other cars heading back to Somerset.  It was indeed a great time – even with our little hiccup.  Experiencing life is way more fun that watching it (and other cars) pass you by.  Enjoy the photos.
