Follow Up: Friends and Family Members Remember Racing Announcer and Personality Jan Gabriel

Last week we announced that Jan Gabriel had passed away at 69. Sunday was a day for friends and family to get together and remember Gabriel and his long and storied career in the world of motorsports. Whether he was belting out his famous, “Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!” call for Ben Christ’s Union Grove Raceway or producing his award-winning “Super Chargers” television show for more than a decade, Gabriel was a well known guy in the world of motorsports entertainment.

We’ll admit that we watched Gabriel for hours on end as kids. His production company made some television specials about monster trucks and Gabriel was one of the lead commentators on the shows. We’ll also admit to adopting some of his frenetic, energetic, announcing style when we grab the mic in a booth at the drag strip. His delivery was unique for the time period when he first got going. Landers was a guy who took the announcing job from being that of an information relay point to an entertaining part of the show.

The other interesting thing claimed in the DailyHerald.com story is the assertion that his famous, “Sunday! Sunday! Sunday!” call originated from a microphone mishap. He was supposed to say Sunday once, but the mic had some sort of echo function activated, so the word played back three times. Everyone liked it and a legend was born.

Pretty cool stuff!
