Best of BangShift 2013: Patina, Classic American Iron, Potential Gassers and More At A New Zealand Junkyard

Best of BangShift 2013: Patina, Classic American Iron, Potential Gassers and More At A New Zealand Junkyard

(Photos supplied by Kev Roberts) – Probably the single coolest thing we do at BangShift is take you places that you otherwise would never get to see. Whether it is to drag races, collections, museums, or in this case a junkyard in New Zealand, we dig the hell out of it. UK based BangShifter Kev Roberts sent us a great bunch of photos shot by a friend of his who was apparently vacationing in New Zealand. That island nation of four million has the bug for motorsports and hot rods as bad as the rest of us and this junkyard full of classic iron from both American and abroad is awesome. You may see rotting old cars but we see plenty of fodder for gasser projects, cool hot rods, and other builds.

There are some shots that also show off the scenery around this place with mountain tops shrouded in fog, fields and all kinds of lush greenery (remember it is summer down there now). This place rivals the cool factor of any American junkyard we’ve been able to highlight here and it has LOTS of truly ancient stuff sitting in it. Keep your eyes peeled for old Fords and even an Oldsmobile! Chad and I figured that we need to hire a shipping container to bring back some of the little Austins and stuff for the straight axle and blown Hemi treatment!

If you dig patina and looking at bitchin’ old stuff, hit the link below and get lost in the beauty and coolness of this NZ boneyard!

WHY are thay not on the road as rats ?
New Zealand has the most lax road registration laws !
got insurance?, do the brakes work?, is it yours? ! Ok your good to go 🙂

    Really look it up.
    But
Do not ask to buy a gun there though i think they will put you in jail just for asking !!!

I have to step up and defend Kiwi honour here, whilst there is a ‘hot import’ element over here V-8 Muscle is very much the predominant car culture in NZ and even the ‘hot import’ people graduate to real cars once they grow up.
As evidence for the defence I present you a couple of links to photos from the 2013 Kumeu Classic Car and Hot Rod Festival, one of the biggest events of its type in the Southern Hemisphere…………………

The junkyard shown is Horopito Motors and is known ’round NZ as Smash Palace, a name it picked up after a movie, called Smash Palace, was filmed there in 1981.
        Their website is…………………..

I have been reliably informed that they are not cheap.
I don’t know about now, but a few years ago if you paid $5 you could have wander around the whole place and check out what was there including their ‘private collection’.

Speaking of Smash Palace here is one of my favorite parts of the movie…………………………

New Zealand has very tough laws on any modified cars, back in 1990’s the NZ govt. was going to bring in a lot of laws that would follow Australia, but instead hot rodders got together and came up with their own rules, there is a book that any new hot rods that are being built have to follow otherwise the cars are not allowed on the road.
