Good Read: Ice Racing Story In the New York Times

When we heard that the New York Times had done a story on the New England Ice Racing Association, we had to check it out. As you’d expect, the story is the stiffest account of an ice race you’ll ever read, but there’s some great stuff in there as well. A little history, a little fender bashing, and some good old screaming and yelling make us think that a visit to a NEIRA race is a must do next winter.

These guys take this stuff seriously as evidenced by some of the confrontations that are mentioned in the story. As you can see in the photo below there are purpose built cars competing with the NEIRA, where other organizations we have seen only allow lightly modified street cars. Hell, in the photo below you can see junk that looks like it could be out there with the World of Outlaws!

The basic rule that is used to determine when racing will occur centers around ice depth. Only a foot or more is suitable. Anything less than 12 inches and the event is called off.

Once we get Goliath, our big C50 project truck up and running, we need to get off our asses and start working on Attila the Jav, our long suffering Javelin ice racer project. Click the link or photo below to see the whole story at the New York Times.

Thanks for the tip Dave Wallace!
