FCA, and in particular Chrysler, is in a weird state right now. They have the 300 series, but won’t sell the SRT model here. They have the 200 series sedan, but that’s pretty vanilla for most people and they aren’t flying off dealership lots like there’s no tomorrow. And then there’s this: on Chrysler’s website right now is a teaser for an upcoming “880” something-or-other that will be revealed on January 11th. “880”…that does have a Mopar ring to it, but Chrysler isn’t the source.
The 1962-65 Dodge Custom 880 was an emergency kit bash of 1961 Chrysler Newport and non-letter 300 Series body styles with the nose clip of the 1961 Polara to create a full-size car that could fill the place of the recently-departed DeSoto line and keep Dodge afloat in the full-size market. Why such a random build? Chrysler had been running on a rumor that Chevrolet was going to downsize their full-size lineup for 1962 and did the same to the Dodge Dart and Polara. But when the 1962 Chevrolets debuted, they were slightly bigger than expected, and the great minds inside Mopar panicked.
An interesting story, but that doesn’t explain just what in the hell is going on now. As much as I want to stomp my foot and scream “300 SRT!!!”, that shit isn’t going to happen anytime soon and Chrysler has pretty much said as much. So what else do you think it could be?
I think it will be an competitor to that maker of pimped-up Chevys known as Cadillac’s answer to the BMW 5 series – but powered by a Hemi!
Has nobody noticed the first 8 is made with a gas hose, the second 8 and 0 are made by an electric cord? I’m thinking it’s a hybrid. Also notice there is a “zap” between the prongs of the second 8’s electric plug.
The first 8 shows images that suggest today’s idiot lifestyle of Instagram, social media, children and shopping. The second 8 and the 0 show nature stuff, with a greener color, implying it’s a “green” car.
Don’t get too excited about this one… my money is on a Prius competitor rather than 880 horsepower.
Seen elsewhere, it’s likely a minivan.
Maybe a full size SUV or take a look at Fiats website and see what could be rebadged as a Dodge.
Something RWD and full framed to take the place of the now defunct Ford Panther platform…..wouldn’t that be glorious?
