Monday Time Killer: The Mexican Shelby Mustangs

We have to thank BangShift.com forum member Joes66Fury2 for the great tip on the DarkHorseRacing website telling the story of the Shelby Mustangs from South of the Border built from 1967 to 1972. Shelby de Mexico was a viable enterprise, producing, selling, and racing several hundred cars a year. We were shamefully unaware that this story even existed!

It shows a few things, but the most obvious is that the allure of a hot car crosses virtually any cultural lines. Sure, there were not 10s of thousands of Mexican Shebys produced, but going on the size of the market, we’d say that the cars had a strong following. They differ from American Shelbys in several ways, from optional content to the fact that most were built on the coupe body style because that was far and away the most available in Mexico. Also, due to Mexican laws at the time, many of the parts for the cars were Mexican built, including the motor.

The website does a great job telling the story and it includes a host of cool old photos as well. Tell your boss that you are working on a project and kill some time!
