If One Is Good, Two Is Better: Twin Disc Clutches Are Great On The Street, Not Just A Race Part Anymore.

If One Is Good, Two Is Better: Twin Disc Clutches Are Great On The Street, Not Just A Race Part Anymore.

It’s the age of the stick shift. I know that’s a big statement, but the truth is there have never been better, or more plentiful, options for putting a stick shift into virtually any vehicle. And it’s also the age of horsepower. Unfortunately, those two things don’t always go together. Until now. It’s incredibly easy to make stupid power with todays high performance engines, along with a gaggle of available power adders, that will break any and all drivetrain parts if you don’t put the right combination together. The clutch in a stick car application is probably one of the most abused parts in the drivetrain, and here is why.

Today’s cars, whether street, strip, pro-touring, or what have you, all have more power, more tire, and more weight than ever before. It’s the perfect storm for clutch destruction. Which means you need the right setup that will take anything you can throw at it. It used to be that everyone made their cars lighter, and only drag cars had big tires. This is not the case anymore. Street and Pro-Touring machines now have 315 tires out back from folks like Falken that will hook so hard that cars on 35 series tires can run in the 9’s. This is all while cars are getting fancier interior, sound deadening, stereos, air conditioning, power everything, and more. All of which comes at the cost of weight. So if you take car that makes big power, weighs a lot, and will dead hook, the clutch is the fusable link. But worry no more!

American Powertrain has come up with a twin disc clutch that can take almost anything. Hence the name. Atomic. It’s a twin disc clutch with a twist. Mild manners for street use mean that even driving this clutch in traffic is nothing you can’t handle, while at the same time holding 1100 lb ft of torque. That’s big power and big numbers, and they aren’t just randomly chosen. Because of the clamping force, friction material, and design, this clutch can handle anything you throw at it. Here are more details.
