Old Timers NASCAR Race at Bristol: Probably the Last

It seemed like a harmless enough idea. Get some old timey NASCAR drivers together who all thought that had a little something left in the tank, turn them loose at the relatively low speed Bristol oval and let’em have fun. It ended with two drivers taken to the hospital, one with a fractured pelvis, and it also effectively ended any more “Legends” races at NASCAR events.

The two racers who got into it were Larry Pearson and Charlie Glotzback (pictured). Both were knocked cold from their crash but Pearson got the worst of it. He was carted off with a compound fracture of the ankle, a broken hand, and a fractured pelvis. He’s still laid up, but he is recovering.

It’s clear that these guys think they can still handle a car, and with drivers like David Pearson in the field, there is definitely still some talent there. But 70 year old guys aren’t built like racers in their 20’s and 30’s and, instead of bouncing around, stuff just breaks.

It was a neat idea, but we’re virtually certain that NASCAR will not want to be dealing with these types of headlines again. We found a great story on FoxNews.com about this mess and others that have happened at “fun” exhibition races in the past. Check it out at the link below.
