Buford T Justice Hits the Strip Tomorrow – Guess the ET and Win a Shirt!

Buford T Justice Hits the Strip Tomorrow – Guess the ET and Win a Shirt!

Tomorrow is a big day in the history of BangShift’s project Buford T Justice. Our 1987 Caprice 9C1 will be running down the quarter mile asphalt aisle at New England Dragway in Epping, NH for the first time. The car is 100% stock aside from the dual exhaust from the manifolds back. It has about 190,000 miles on it and other than some fresh oil and a set of used rear tires from the junkyard, nothing has been changed on the car.

We’re going to run Buford just to get some base numbers, although the 350 that is in the car isn’t long for the engine bay. We’ll be putting a big block in our Caprice over the course of the next couple of months, upgrading the suspension significantly, adding new/larger wheels and tires, and making interior upgrades as well. Don’t be fooled though. We have a plan for that mouse motor that is coming out of the Caprice. Remember my wrecker that’s long on looks and way short on horsepower and torque? Once the Caprice is done, we’ll turn our guns on that.

So now is the audience participation part of the program. In the comment section below, guess the elapsed time and mph that the car will run. The first to guess without going over on BOTH aspects of the run (you didn’t think we would make this easy, did you?) will win a BangShift shirt!

To review, this is a 3700lb car with a factory rated 160hp engine that has 190,000 miles, a 3.08 rear end, a 700R4 transmission, and a 210lb driver. The car does have dual exhausts from the manifolds back that are about 2″ in diameter. As a hint, we’ll tell you that several of the ponies have headed to the glue factory.

Guess Buford T Justice’s elapsed time and MPH without going over and win a BS shirt! First guess that is closest wins!

Hmm… I have no freaking clue – but I’m going to throw a swag out anyway – 17.55

    Have fun!

Can I get a second guess.. I think it’s a DNF. It is Bufords car after all and is liable to end up in a lake.

I’ll take 16.25 @ 85mph. My heavy ass Centurion ran a 15.5 @ 89mph, and it “might” have 100HP on you, but it also weighed over 5100lbs with me in it.

    My guess is 16.511 @79.51.

Will you only be making one run?

Multiple runs? How ’bout a t-shirt for the closest guess for each?

I’ll be choosing one of the first designs; the one with the big BS logo in size large…

I’m gonna say you can order a pizza while in the burnout box and then meet the delivery guy at the first turnout.

19.23, probably getting passed by an old lady on a Rascal Scooter. Assuming you pass tech! It’ll take a BBC to get it into the 13’s. 🙂 hahahaha. Good luck and have fun!

I’m thinking 18.1 at 77. That might be a little pessimistic, but some of the readers here are suggesting times in the 15s! An automatic fox mustang gt would only run about that with 225 hp and a whole lot less weight.

I’ve done this- take a high milage car to blast the 1/4 mile as is…190,000 miles will be BTJ’s final hurra. You driving it hard, either timing chain will eat the gears, or broken rod. So, DNF. And I know that car is a one legger tourque monster-jump up super fast to get going medium speed. Can you hear the air suck through the filter when you gun it? Yea…I used to have one. Drive hard.

LO5 camaros had 190hp… they had flat tops and a roller L98 cam. worst thing about the engine is the shitty ass swirl port heads. I swapped some big valve 305 heads on my 90 and it would roast the tires for 2 blocks. keep that engine if you can.
