Project Car Video Update: The 1983 Mustang GT Packing 545ci of Big Block Ford Prepares for Drag Week!

About a year ago, BangShift forum member BigBlockRanger decided to switch project gears and ditch the little truck that housed his large block Ford mill and find something that he could cruise with his sons. That something was a 1983 Mustang GT. Being from Texas, the car was relatively rust free but did have some “heat stressed” pieces of the interior. It also had the wheezy 302ci small block that it left Dearborn with, back in ’83.

The interior and the motor were of little concern to James who started blowing the car apart after he got it into his home garage. One of our favorite parts of this build is the amount of documentation James has provided. It is a great guide for converting a Mustang over to big block power. James, in our opinion, has done the right thing by being systematic in his approach and not rushing right to step z which is installing the engine.

The motor is in the car now and some of the finish work is going on. Prior to that, virtually every inch and component on the car was touched, removed, welded on, beefed up, or altered in some way to handle the prodigious power the big poked and stroked fat block will provide.

The part of this deal that is 100% BangShift approved (other than the big ass motor headed into the car) is the fact that James has been the guy doing all the wrenching on the car. He assembled the motor, did all the welding, set up the new rear end, and has really owned every inch of the project. That’s greatness in our book!

UPDATE – 2/1/2011 — This bad ass bucket of crazy runs! Since we last left this project in November, work has progressed on a nice, even, paced cadence. The engine was installed when you last read about the car, but it was not plumbed or wired, other systems in the car had to be completed, and James was not going to rush the fire up process of the 545ci Ford big block. His patience was rewarded recently when he lit the wick on the 545 and it roared to life. Check the video below and then hit the link to the updates in the build thread. This car is seriously awesome.

Update – 8/11/2011 – So yeah, we’ve been way sleeping at the switch with respect to updates on this bad ass Ford! James has been busting his ass to get the car ready, willing, and able to compete in Hot Rod Drag Week 2011 coming this September. We’re going to drop you off at the May time frame and let you read on from there as this is where James makes the final adjustments to the motor, fuel system, etc. It is also when he gets cracking on the trailer hitch and other prep for the unique punishment the car will see on Drag Week. This is one mean car!

I have moved on, what are you clowns doing here? And posting links no less, that as you now know, the good folks here with a lifetime ban will not even be able to see. I’m done with this, as I do not want to wear out my welcome on a forum that the officials here do care about the hobby and spend their own coin to support it, totally unlike the officials at the this place that rub their new office digs in all of your faces. You guys really should consider a forum that is in it for the betterment, instead of making a profit and hanging on tight to it.
