Project Car Spotlight: An Abandoned 1940 Ford Gets New Life in a BangShifter’s Home Shop

Project Car Spotlight: An Abandoned 1940 Ford Gets New Life in a BangShifter’s Home Shop

When it comes to iconic body styles in the world of hot rodding, the 1940 Ford is one of the great examples. The cars can be made into killer gassers, street rods, Pro Street machines, moonshiner clones, and traditional rods. BangShift member Ed found one sitting in a western Kansas junkyard and it was love at fight sight. After getting a tetanus shot and heading back to the yard with his trailer, he was the proud owner of the car shown below. Ed is a dude who like to use his stuff to the fullest as a multi-time long hauler on the Hot Rod Power Tour, so we know that this car isn’t being built to gather dust and look shiny in the corner of his garage. We have been following along with his progress on this build because it is a great example of how to bring an old car back to life with lots of elbow grease, a well thought out plan, and good old fashioned hot rodding techniques.

Ed has a lot of great photos that begin with his initial rescue of the car, pulling the body off the frame, repairing the parts of the body that the steel worms had eaten and all of his progress to this point, really. The coolest part is that he is building the car for his better half, Mary who has supported his gasoline soaked car addiction for years. Ed build hisself a bitchin’ truck years ago and Mary was cheering him on the whole time, so this ’40 is pay back to her. (We’re sure he may sneak a drive here and there, though!)

The drivetrain will be a stout 400+ hp small block Chevy backed with an automatic transmission, which auto has not been totally decided yet, but it will probably be a TH350/400 or 200R4 overdrive unit. The rear is a Ford 9-inch that’ll roast both tires when commanded to. At this point in the project, he has the frame boxed and the suspension bolted on. He is neck deep in the metal work needed to bring the body back up to snuff which is neat stuff to watch progress.

This is a neat car and we’re looking forward to following it until Mary is smoldering the tires at the end of their driveway!
