Project Car Spotlight: The 1979 Mustang Pace Car Racecar

Project Car Spotlight: The 1979 Mustang Pace Car Racecar

Bangshift.com member Jeremy George’s 1979 Mustang Pace Car edition has gone from a neglected car sitting beside a barn to a feisty autocross runner that will see action on frozen lakes this winter and perhaps some full blown road course duty in the future. It currently sports a dutiful 2.3L four banger but SVO power seems to be in the cards and Jeremy has made great strides in the suspension department. It is a neat build because Jeremy has been doing things the logical way. Or better stated, the way we typically don’t do things.

By sticking with the stock motor, but making it run right, and concentrating on improving the things that would make the car perform better in the realms it was to be used for, he’s well on his way to a serious corner carver. There’s no need for a snotty small block at the autocross where the majority of the event is run in the first two gears.

Our favorite part of this project is that the car was given to Jeremy by another BangShift.com member because it had just been sitting for so long and he knew how big a Ford freak Jeremy is. He’s taken the donation and really gotten after it. Hit the link below and follow the story of a car that has gone from a slumbering horse headed to the glue factory to a nimble organ-shifter in eight months. The best part is that this is just the beginning for the car. Jeremy has some killer plans for the future!

UPDATE – 1/14/2010 — We’re woefully behind with a project update on the 1979 Mustang Pace Car Racecar! When we last left you, Jeremy had been wrenching on the car, it was back to life and he was getting ready to hit the strip to check on the tune up. The car is not a strip brawler but rather an autocross/corner carver. It is packing a wee little turbo four engine and as you saw in the build portion of the thread, a great suspension.

The awesome part of the story picks up when you hit the link. The car gets used and abused (in a good way!) all summer long and into the fall. Jeremy shows his talents behind the tiller by racking up several class wins at different autocross events and the little Mustang really shines in its second life. Pretty awesome for a car that was sitting beside a barn for many years in the harsh Northeast elements. Hit the link below to see this little baddie of a Mustang become a full fledged race winner!
