Project Fat Lane Update: The Tin Is Going In and Go Fast Parts Arrive

Project Fat Lane, the 2,500hp Ford Fairlane drag car being built at Tube Chassis Designz in Hanson, Massachusetts is on the move yet again. Actually it is still on the chassis table, but the project is moving along with lots of the interior tin being installed, the driveshaft enclosure being fabricated, the trunk area getting closed up, doors being rough hung, and some necessary hard core speed parts showing up to the shop. Mags that you could arc weld with from MSD are always nice to rub up on.

One of the things we hope you’ll get from following our series of stories on the construction of this car is just how much work and how many hours go into actually making a project like this come to life. Outside of all the pipe, and there is seemingly miles of it in there, that has to be fit and cut and welded, there’s stuff like tin work which doesn’t get any of the love that the pipe fabrication does. The tinning of a car like this is a complex and slow moving process, especially if you’re anal professionals like Jon and John at Tube Chassis. From building the wheel tubs that could double as molds for an olympic snow board half pipe, to making the awesome but intricate panels of the floor, this is work that takes time and experience to properly execute. On top of that the welding is nearly artistic. The boys also fabbed up the area in the nose where the fuel cell will live and be protected.

On the speed parts front and as you’ll see in the gallery, an MSD 44 amp Pro Mag arrived and has been mocked onto the engine. There are welders out there that don’t put our 44 amps. All of that firepower will be needed to light off the heavily compressed load of methanol that will be heading into the cylinders of the KB Olds based engine that the car will be powered by.
