Project Update: The AMX/GTO Project is nearly complete!

Project Update: The AMX/GTO Project is nearly complete!

The wild AMX/GTO project is on the home stretch! As a quick refresher, this car is a 1969 AMX body that was placed on the chassis of a wrecked 2007 Pontiac GTO. The GTO was cut and narrowed, the AMX body was left virtually unaltered, and after a whole bunch of welding and work that is all pretty much hidden, the marriage of the two is complete. At this point the car starts and run minto, the jambs and engine bay have been painted, all of the GTO electrical stuff is done, the interior is done, and final fitment of the front fenders, hood, and doors, is underway.

In a little more than a year Scott, who is a virtual neighbor of the BS eastern world HQ in Massachusetts has combined these two cars, the wrecked GTO and an AMX that had seen far better days in a pretty amazing feat of home garage car building. The thing that is really impressive to us is how well the GTO interior fits inside the AMX, dash and all. There was some cutting and chopping of said dash, but sitting in the car and actually experiencing the interior  is very neat. He managed to incorporate all of the modern electronics from the GTO, and we mean all of them. Electric gas door opening button? Check. Navigation? Power Seats? Electric Trunk Popper? Check, check, check. We can’t wait to go for a ride.

Once Scott gets the front fender fit properly, the car will get the paint finished and he will concentrate on the doodads like door handles, trim, etc. The heavy lifting on this thing is all done. As soon as it is ready and the paint is dry, look for a full bore feature here on BangShift!

I have trouble wrapping my head around the idea of taking the body from a body and frame car and putting on a unit body car. Wow.

    Wow, Really?
You guys should know better, there was no 2007 GTO. However I have a 2006 GTO (bought new) and am very impressed! The more wrecked and chopped up GTO’s, the rarer mine becomes!

Just in response to Whelk and others, a GTO isn’t a `body and frame/chassis’ car… its just a unit body like any other Holden Commodore….(remember these GTO’s aren’t some `rare’ US car, they’re just a rebadged Australian Monaro, itself just a 2 door Commodore (or Commondore as they’re known here – everybody and their dog has one…)

04-06 is when the GTO was made and since you have an LS2 engine its a 05-06. GTOs are a rare breed in the US, but not so much in Australia since that is where the cars were made and rebadged. Don’t forget they are also in the UK (as Vauxhalls) and Middle East (as Chevys). But to the average person they don’t know they were made outside of the US. And if you’re taking it for a drive how are you going to shift gears or put it into drive? I see nothing where the gear box is……nicely done project.

Guys, my bad on the GTO year typo. The wrecked car was an ’06.

Josh, there is a shifter in route for the car. Scott needed one that would bring the handle back about 4 inches to put it into the proper opening in the console. The trans and all is in there, but there is no shifter mounted currently.

I worked at an AMC dealership back in 1971 while driving my ’69 Camaro. Anyway, we never had any AMXs but did have a new Rebel Machine and a neat 360/4-speed Javelin in stock.
Then, later, I worked at a Pontiac-Buick-GMC shop so I’ve kinda got a soft spot for GTOs and AMXs. Therefore, I absolutely love this thing. Hell, they could sell all the AMXs thewy could build today if they looked like this.

@ Bow Tie Guy, couldn’t agree with you more … I know AMC’s aren’t that common & aftermarket “hot-up” kits & conversions aren’t readily available, but if you could sell this as a kit? I’d buy in a heartbeat.
I’ve got a ’70 Javelin & the old boy’s got a Monaro (right-hook GTO), & they’re pretty close in size … do you think a Jav would make a better recipient for the Chev donor than the AMX?

Keep up the great work, Scott. Can’t wait to see this Big Bad Boy when its done!!!

The javelin would be a prefect fit let me know if you need any tips I shortened the floor pan 14 inches it would be way better as a javelin,
