Project Update: The Hard Guys Nostalgia Nitro Funny Car Gets Bathed in Epic Paint!

In the last update we ran about The Hard Guys nostalgia Nitro Funny Car, we told you that the body was done being prepped and paint was the next step. We also told you that the paint was guaranteed to be 100% awesome because it was being laid on by our boys at the infamous “Bat Cave Bodyshop”. Not to brag, but we were right. This is one of the finest looking floppers in the country, nostlagia or otherwise.

As you’ll see in the gallery of nearly 60 photos, the detail work is incredible. Blair Smith, the mad genius who schemed up the paint and actually laid it down is a drag racing history freak and has a crazy appreciation for the techniques and style of late 1960s. He used lace extensively in this job along with some wild fish scaling, pin striping, bubbling, and other elements that have become a lost art in today’s world of wraps and ready made graphic packages.

We shot these photos with the car inside the shop due to some crap New England winter weather, but once the body is on the chassis and we can shoot it outside we will do a huge BangShift feature on this car. Mike Smith will be driving the car and working with car owner Dana Hard on the tune up and procedures for running it without torching the body and completely annihilating his wallet.

That is a beautiful paint job and a lost art , craftsmanship that can not be replaced by a computer generated wrap.

man I wish I could afford that kinda paint for my ’67. I love that nostalgic paint when it’s done right like this. It has a ton of detail but still manages some subtlety when looking from a distance…incredible paint!!!

Gorgeous!! Reminds me of Bill Carter’s paint on the ‘Stone Age Man’ AA/Fuel Dragster. Can’t wait to see it.
