Rumors Of A Supercharged Viper Were (Mostly) True: Enter The Sledgehammer!

Rumors Of A Supercharged Viper Were (Mostly) True: Enter The Sledgehammer!

With Dodge’s unveiling of the Hellcat twins last year, the immediate question that popped into everyone’s mind was, “What about the Viper?” While there is a huge amount of difference between a sedan and GT-style coupe and a purpose-built super car, the fact of the matter was that the Viper was down nearly sixty horsepower and costs about forty to fifty thousand dollars more. The sales numbers weren’t doing well, either, and then there was the issue of FCA cutting off factory support for the race Vipers. Things did not look good for the Viper at all. Then, the rumor mill started to rumble about a Viper with a supercharger floating around Auburn Hills. It was easy to dismiss…there wasn’t a known program in place, and it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary to test a one-off product.

And that would be well and good, except that in a roundabout kind of way, it’s legit. No, FCA isn’t offering a supercharged Viper from the factory. What they did is enter into a deal Arrow Racing and gave them permission to mess with the computer. Arrow Racing has put together three packages: a mild version, which is a tune that gives the stock Viper a 20-25hp kick in the tail, a moderate version which is a heads and cam package good enough for 75-80hp, and then there’s the Sledgehammer package, which uses a low-profile Rootes-style blower to add 250-ish horsepower to the already potent 640hp the Viper comes with from the factory. What isn’t known is if the heads/cam combination can be paired with the blower, and if so, what that number will be. The packages are available exclusively from Tomball Dodge, which is better known as the Viper Exchange and is the largest Viper dealer in the country. There’s shades of Mr. Norm’s Grand Spaulding Dodge going on here, and while the price category is well above our pay levels, it’s awesome to see the dealership and a racing group being allowed to tweak on what is an already-potent platform.

I’m just waiting on TJ Martin / GuitarSlinger / ColoradoKid aka Jimmy Kendrick’s rant on this Viper.

This coming from an addled and deluded all things Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth cheerleader foolish enough to believe anything that comes from FCA , never mind its overlord Sergio Marchionne as well as ignorant enough to use a moniker from said company’s past as his online user name . Brilliant !

By the way Zippy . Who the ___ is JK , GS or CK ? More of your delusions taking over the last remains of what little reality still barely exists inside your head perhaps ? A recommendation if I may ? Seek professional help . Before its too late 😉

Oh . And by the way in case this subtle little historical fact has eluded you . The 1975 Plymouth Duster was and still is the absolute worst of the breed Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth ever produced in its long and disastrous , bailout riddled , having recently been given to FIAT existence . Pre 1970’s models being the only cars coming from the company worthy of ones consideration .

Then again Zippy . If you were a genuine gearhead that had even a minor clue what you were talking about . You’d of know all that . Nuff said

But wait Zippy ! There’s more . In case this subtlety also eluded/escaped you . This supercharged Viper is a ‘ Tuner ‘ car . Not a factory offering from the minds (or lack there of ) of FCA

Maybe you should listen to Tedly, Jimmy and stop behaving like such an asshole that you are on Bangshift.

890 hp… getting another step closer to a 1000hp car from the factory.

I know this is an aftermarket tuner, but it’s factory sanctioned. Inching closer to that milestone.
