This is not a newsflash for S197 Mustang owners but the stock Getrag MT82 manual transmission essentially blows goats for all out performance driving. There have been lots of customer complaints about shifting difficulty in different circumstances, but spend a night at the drag strip or even got for a “spirited” drive with your buddy that owns one of these things and we’re going to guarantee that you’ll see or experience someone struggling to shift the thing during aggressive driving. Enter Tremec! Their brand new Magnum XL transmission is here and the first direct bolt in application is for the SN197 Mustang. There are more versions coming, in fact we were playing with one on a display stand a little while ago and they’re pretty awesome.
The secret to the six speed Magnum XL’s awesomeness is the newly engineered extended length housing where the shifter mounts on the transmission. This is not some weak suck remote shifter mount that is clumsy and prone to jamming, sticking in gear, and generally failing you at the wrong time. This is a direct shift style system, so there is nothing to stick or bind. The Tremec guys but a ton of work and engineering into this transmission to make sure it is a legit and a major league upgrade over the stock piece.
If you want one of these things, hit the guys up at American Powertrain in a hurry because there is a lot of pent up demand from the Mustang community for these crash boxes. Tremec will be rolling out versions of this transmission for lots of late model performance cars, again, as direct bolt in pieces.
