Best Of BangShift: 1980s Promotional Video For RacePak Narrated by Steve Evans and Featuring NHRA Greats

Yesterday we talked about the development of the RacePak on board racing computer during our interview with Dale Armstrong. After that story ran, we got tipped off to a really cool video that must have been made right about the time that the computers were starting to be sold to the general public. Narrated by Steve Evans, this nine-minute promotional film talks about what the device is, how it works, and even goes through a basic analysis of the data it provides to Kenny Bernstein during a run.

The film was made at Firebird Raceway in Phoenix, presumably at a pre-season test session. Filming something like this during a race weekend would be virtually impossible with how busy the team, drivers, and pit area is. It is always cool to hear Steve Evans do anything, especially when it is work we have never heard before. It is also neat to see guys like Pat Austin and Darrel Gwynn in their prime talk about how amazing this new technology is. As compared to what today’s data acquisition equipment can do, this thing was like a Tandy! It is all relative, though. At the time, even this basic computer was Earth shattering stuff.

Press play below to hear the great tones of Steve Evans and 9 minutes of truly cool 1980s drag racing footage!
