Diesel Swap! Hot Rod Garage Takes A 12V Cummins And Jams It Into A Dodge D200

Diesel Swap! Hot Rod Garage Takes A 12V Cummins And Jams It Into A Dodge D200

Making the kind of power with an oil-burner that would have been unbelievable years ago is stupid-easy nowadays, and while the diesel community have the lines drawn in the dirt, for us, our choice would be the Cummins inline-sixes. Ever since Dodge started jamming them into pickups back at the tail end of the 1980s they have been in the top-tier of anything diesel related. Just name it: drag racing, truck pulls, off-roading, work…chances are good that you will find a Cummins nearby. While lots of enthusiasts consider the 1989-1993 Rams “classic”, other enthusiasts might want to consider going with an older body.

In this episode of Hot Rod Garage, Tony Angelo brings out a vehicle we haven’t seen since the first Roadkill episode with the General Mayhem Charger. This 1973 Dodge D200 was on the chopping block as the Charger’s first engine donor, but at the last second Freiburger decided that it was too nice to total out. Angelo ended up with the truck, and with it a 400ci big-block under the hood that had something seriously wrong. Instead of rebuilding the big-block, Angelo instead scored a very ragged out 1995 Ram 2500. The body is hosed, the interior is missing, but the 12V Cummins and the 47RH automatic (itself a 727HD with an overdrive on the tail) is present and in good running condition. With the early goal of just getting the truck running, the plan seems solid…but then there is the issue of Angelo calling in a fabricator he knows from his drifting days. Hmm…Is this a match made in heaven or the engine swap from hell? Click play below to find out!

I always wondered what it entailed to swap in a Cummins turbo diesel into a early ’70’s Dodge truck, I’m glad that I stuck with my 5.7 Hemi in my ’74 D100.

It would actually be a bit easier if they had a 1989-93 D350 to just frame-swap the entire system over instead of having to go between D-frame and the 1994-style BR frame.
