Forgive the hysterical title, but we were just tipped off to the gearhead equivalent of catching Elvis screwing a unicorn. There’s a guy on the Hemmings website curretly selling what appears to be the most extensive and complete set of never used Turbonique stuff in the known universe. Hell, it even comes with the instruction manual, yes, as insane as Turbonique stuff was, there were directions.
The seller has (and these are all brand new and complete parts) the turbine driven supercharger, a turbine powered gear driven motor, and a straight thrust rocket engine. The turbine driven supercharger could be activated with an on/off switch because it operated by igniting Thermolene fuel to spin the turbine that then drove the supercharger. We’re not sure of the use for the turbine driven motor, unless it was one of the company’s rocket drag axles, and the thrust engine was, depending on how much thrust it produced likely intended for a go kart or other small vehicle.
As we said before, we’ve never seen a collection of Turbonique stuff this complete, let alone in brand new condition. Gene Middlebrooks who founded the company ended up in prison for mail fraud because people would pay a pile of money for Turbonique stuff and then would receive a lot of semi-finished castings and little else. All of this equipment must have been from the earlier days of the company when complete products would arrive to waiting customers.
An amazing grouping of equipment here that comes with the tanks, regulators, and lines t make it all work! There some guys out there with Turbonique pieces kicking around, but again, we’ve never seen virtually the whole product line up in one place, especially in this shape!
The fuel that was used in these things no longer is made, so even if you had a large enough death wish to try this stuff out, we don’t think it is possible. Then again, we didn’t think it was possible that Twitter would be successful, so what the Hell do we know?
