While EFI is on the end of everyone’s tongue these days, there is still a booming marketplace for carbs and for guys and girls who like to tinker, tune, and experiment, they are devilish fun. On the street or at the track, tuning your carb for optimum performance is important. Obviously at the track your concerns are about all-out performance, elapsed time, and consistency. On the street you want good manners, throttle response, the best economy possible, and the ability to land on the throttle and blow off the jerk in the Camry in the next lane.
The power valve in your carb is a very important piece of the puzzle, and like nearly all other aspects of the system, it is able to be tweaked and tuned. The power valve provides fuel enrichment when there is a heavy load on the engine or you are romping down the road or track at full throttle. As they are vacuum operated, there are multiple valves available that have different vacuum ratings to get the timing of the valve’s actuation in tune with the needs of your motor.
In this video, you’ll learn about the power valve, some great guidelines to determine which valve is right for your application, and how to identify different valves. This is great information for both the carb newbie and the old salt that has been at it for decades!
