Carnage of the Week: Davy Jones Wrecks Huge at 1986 IMSA Race

Man, this one has it all. Brock Yates and Steve Evans on the call, killer 1980’s IMSA GTP cars, and a massive wreck at high speeds. Davy Jones was the driver and he somehow managed to walk away.

The intensity in the voices of Yates and Evans lead us to believe that this was one barn burner of a race. Also the fact that Jones appears to be trying to make a move on a portion of the track that seems nearly impossible to pass on bolsters that belief.

The IMSA GTP cars of the 1980s were wild machines that featured technology (and budgets) that were light years ahead of the stuff that other racing series were headlining around the county. The “prototype” cars shared little to nothing with any type of production vehicle but they ran like stink around the best road courses in the land. The GTO class was really a hoot to watch and had a more production based flavor.

It’s astounding that Jones walked away from this mess as his car was tore up from the floor up when the pieces stopped raining from the sky.
