Carnage of the Week: Massively Destructive Turbine Engine Test

For this installment of Carnage of the Week we’re entering the world of aviation. This is video of a “blade off test” that simulates what happens when a fan blade breaks off and makes its way into the guts of a running turbine engine.

With the innards of the turbine spinning at tens of thousands of RPM it may come as no suprise to you that the results of a fan blade heading through there are awesomly horrendous. The point of the test is not to see of the engine will fail, in fact that’s an integral part of the test, making sure it does fail. The real reason for doing this is to make sure that nothing escapes the housing that the engine is mounted in. If the pieces got out at 30,000 feet, the result would be an airplane chopped into pieces and falling to the ground.

What looks like a disaster is actually a passing grade! Duck when you hit play.
