If you see a Dodge Omni anymore, it’s in one of three conditions. The first one is the survivor that is hanging on, usually by a thread, and has vultures circling around it. The second are Omni GLH and GLHS, the turbo lightweights that had Shelby’s magic involved. Those tiny little bastards could punch well above their weight class and have become the stuff of legends. Then you have the third type, like the one pictured here. Visually, this Omni sedan doesn’t say “turbo car”…in fact, having the Shelby air dam adds to the “junker trying to be something” act. This is when you need to be extremely suspicious, because this is sleeper material done right. Factory, a GLHS was good for a 14.2 quarter mile stock. After nearly thirty years on this planet, if it’s at a drag strip, bet good money that it isn’t stock. Built up Chrysler 2.2 four-cylinders can push minivans into the 11-second arena, so imagine what the damage would look like in the lighter Omni.
Or, you could ask the owner of this C6 Z06, who after this run, was probably ready to puke in his suit. I’m sure he’ll tell you everything he thinks about having his ass handed to him by a front-wheel-drive econo-turd from the 1980s.

Just turn it into the wall. Yup, that’s why I lost, I hit the wall, lol.
I ran at the first Test n’ Tune at Fontana (when it was on the other side of the parking lot), and watched an old hippy in a VW van blow an import with a big wing on it out of the water, and my friend turned to me before the race was even over and said, “Just turn it into the wall” lmao! The VW van launching was the photo the Daily Bulletin went with for the news article on the track opening, lol.
Just to add to the sleeper look would be Walmart bags filled with groceries under the hatch. Hope the Vette guys doesn’t have too many friends like me because for years I would be asking, “hey remember that day when you raced that Omni/Horizon?”
Not to mention the best part of driving the Omni- even if he lost, who is the Z06 guy going to brag to? “Dude, I just edged out this REALLY fast Dodge Omni…”
