Best of BangShift: Watch An Ancient Stationary Diesel Run Away On Fire Up And The Huge Guy Who Wrestles It Back To Idle!

As gearheads we all find ourselves in dangerous situations now and again. Maybe it is driving a race car fast, fixing something on the side of the highway as traffic flies by, or in the case of this guy and his friends, nearly being killed by a huge and ancient stationary diesel engine that is running away. We’re not sure if the huge guy in the blue coveralls qualifies as the bravest son of a bitch we’ve ever seen or the craziest, but we’ll tell you one thing. If we were next to that big engine and it took off running, shaking, and trying to kill us in any way possible we’d have sought out shelter, waited for the explosion and the pieces to rain down before getting near it again. According to the comments on the video, the engine is designed to run at about 400 RPM and the guy who starts it when the run away occurs thinks it clipped 1,000 RPM or better before it calmed down. The engine appears to be just sitting atop some big wooden beams and it isn’t chained or fastened down at all. The first attempt to start it has it rocking wildly. The guys reset the engine and try again at the 1:00 mark it is lights off.

Pay close attention to the flywheel. When the engine does actually start, it switches direction 2-3 times before the mill figured out which way it wants to spin! The engine was apparently overfilled with oil and that’s what caused the issue. Instead of running on the diesel fuel it was supposed to be ingesting the motor started to run on its own oil. To the credit of the huge guy, he knew exactly what to do. He somehow blocked the injection pump, cutting the fuel to the engine drastically, got one of his pals (a trusting soul!) to block the secondary air intake, and then had a guy kill the fuel supply.

Don’t try this at home, kids!

Press play below to see a couple dudes come closer to death than they probably realize — skip to 1:00 if you want to get right on with the action!
