This English Demo Derby Car’s Clutch Explodes In The Pits And Makes Absolutely Comical Noises

This English Demo Derby Car’s Clutch Explodes In The Pits And Makes Absolutely Comical Noises

We understand that exploding clutches are no joke and that they can be very, and we mean very bad for the health of the guy sitting near the transmission but sometimes funny is funny. We know that the guy in the car is names Ricky and it appears Ricky is going to be competing in a demolition derby in his pink sedan. We’re guessing demo derby because the fenders have been trimmed, there is a number plate on the roof, and you can see some reinforcing panels on the side of the car which look to be for securing the doors and perhaps making a bit of structural improvement around the driver area.

For reasons unbeknownst to anyone outside of Ricky, he is sitting stationary and winging the revs up. We don’t think the guy was trying to show off for the assembled crowd and we’re fairly sure that the throttle did not hang open but on the last climb up the rev charts, things don’t go well. In fact, they go so “not well” that the car sprays parts and pieces all over the place. You can see Ricky’s natural reaction is to kind of throw his arms up and protect himself from the shrapnel. The thing that cracked us up was the noise. It sounds straight out of a Benny Hill or other slapstick comedy routine. Clanging, banging, and hollow metal sounds. It is really funny stuff and initially only became funny when the dude jumped out of the front seat and exited the vehicle through the opening where the windshield used to live.

We think that it is safe to say Ol’ Ricky didn’t get out there to smash and bash on the day this was filmed. Can anyone ID the car? We sure can’t.

I’m thinking Enduro type race, as opposed to a Demo Derby. I wouldn’t feel that safe in a derby in that thing, even before grenading a clutch.

It’s a class known as bangers. One of the formulas raced on UK ovals and is actually a race where full contact is allowed so it’s not last man standing but the guy whose in front at the end of whatever laps the race is. Known as a “contact formula”.

Ah – Ricky too many revs. LOL

Never ceases to amaze me – this type of racing.

Find/buy a car for nothing – put a number on it and its a race car. (NOT)

That is the funniest response I have heard in a while! We tried to tell him, “Ricky, dont lose that number,” but you know how kids are these days! LOLOL

British banger racing. Cars are not reinforced like in the U.S. All they have is a door plate & rollbar bolted thru’ the roof. Water tanks are mounted alongside/behind the engine instead of a rad. Races over 15 or so laps, full contact, 1st over the line wins but a lot of drivers go out for the big crash. Anything still running at the end of the day goes out in a last man running DD.
Cars do fold a lot but very few real injuries. Proper racing, not welded up tanks sliding into each other at 15mph!!
