Great Video: The Profile of A Totally Unrestored and Running 1970 USAC Open Wheel Car

Great Video: The Profile of A Totally Unrestored and Running 1970 USAC Open Wheel Car

Holley has been cranking out some truly kick ass video content lately. We’ve been keeping up over the last couple of weeks and this one may be their best yet. In this piece, you’ll hear Bill Akin, the owner of this totally unrestored 1970 USAC open wheel dirt track car. According to Akin, this machine was built to compete on one-mile dirt ovals in the heartland of the country and in places like the Indianapolis fairgrounds. Lots of people thought this was an old Indy car (like Chad..hehe) so it is really neat to hear the true history and tech behind this car from Akin.

We dig the fact that Akin has not made this car all shiny and nice again. Fact is, this car would not have been shiny and nice after about 10 minutes into the first race of its career. Having seen it in person ourselves, it is eternally bitchin’. When we poured over it, the hood cowling was on so we missed the whole old school dry sump setup and all of the good details under the hood. This video captures them all.

We’ve got to give the boys from Holley props for having keen eyes and good taste in profiling this car and Bill Akin for not turning it into a museum piece. Hell, he got it running and still takes it to events to stretch the car’s legs whenever possible. How cool is that?!

Press play below to learn the history and technical details behind one of the coolest cars we’ve ever laid eyes on!

Great video. Only fault is that we didn’t hear it run. What a piece of history, though.

I was there and saw that car. I came back to look at it 3 times that day. It’s a wonderful piece and makes you think what happened to all thos old race cars and why more people arent restoring them. Id love to take a few laps in it.
