Why Hasn’t This Idea Caught On? RWD V8 Chrysler LH Platforms-Make That Intrepid Haul!

The Chrysler LH platform was exactly what the company needed in the early 1990’s: Something that wasn’t a K-car that had looks, some performance and lots of value. Over the course of eleven years and two generations, millions of these things were sold, as Chryslers (Concorde, LHS, New Yorker and 300M), Dodge (Intrepid), and even Eagle (Vision). These cars brought design elements that would influence a generation of cars that Chrysler called “cab-forward”, which included sloping windshields and wheels pushed out to the corners for greater interior room. A unique feature was that, for a front-driver, the LH platforms had a traditional north-south engine layout and a trans tunnel. While there is no truly plausible explanation for why the LH has all the makings of a large RWD sedan, there are quite a few people who took notice, especially after seeing the television show “Viper”, where the Intrepid cop cars were rumored to be RWD test mules.

Without question, there is some engineering that would have to take place to get engine and driveline in there, but the space is available. With the slick aerodynamics, one of these set up for Bonneville or Maxton would be really interesting to see. And there are already conversions, in both small-block and big-block varieties. If you’re interested in seeing the basic ideas, you can check out a link to LH Forums here and see what it took to convert a second-gen Intrepid to a small-block. Meanwhile, check out the videos below!

A RWD V-8 could only help these rolling piles of crap. Had one, bought new. Broke down 3 times early on. Always while we were on vacation, at least a hundred miles from home and usually on a Sunday or holiday. Hopefully the new Fiats…I mean Chrysler products are a tad better.
