Historic Drag Video: Awesome Footage From the 1963 and 1966 March Meets

Well we’re done for the day. We’re going to sign off and start the thrash to get ourselves situated to bring you awesome live streaming coverage of the 55th March Meet at Auto Club Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, California, starting when racing begins Thursday. Just to keep your heart rate up until then, we’re dropping two killer videos featuring action from the 1963 and 1966 March Meets.

While lots of stuff has changed over the years, Famoso Raceway remains in the top two or three coolest drag strips in the world and the March Meet holds onto the spot as one of the sport’s most enduring and traditionally awesome event.

    I think that was the race the Surfers won with 7 cylinders. I remember reading somewhere that they broke a rod and holed the block in the semis. Skinner and Jobe dropped the pan, removed the lower part of the broken rod, and put the pan back on. They took the plug out of the cylinder and patched the hole in the block with some cardboard and duct tape. Jim Brissette took a look at the “repair” and guessed that it would last until 800 feet, which is exactly what happened. If you look at the video above you can see that the Surfers trail Warren and Coburn across the finish by a considerable distance. Cole Coonce wrote a great piece on the Surfers for “Hot Rod” in ’98 that can be read .
