Historic Video: Holden Precision Driving Team In HQ Monaros

The Holden Precision Driving Team operated from 1968 to 1999, and after a a couple of years driving Hyundais, as the Holden Stormriders from 2003-2008 and were known for taking performance Holdens and thrashing on them for the amusement of audiences, especially at the Bathurst 1000 race as a pre-show of sorts. This clip features four of Holden’s legendary 1971-74 HQ Monaro GTS coupes running through their paces as part of a promotional film for the team. There’s plenty of early 1970’s touches, from the colors of the cars to the music used, but this is still a driving video: You get in-car shots of formation driving, and 90-degree set ramps that are one miscalculation away from a nasty T-bone accident, as well as plenty of glorious exhaust noise. The team today, separated from Holden in 2008, is now known as Team D-max, after the Isuzu trucks that they have operated since 2013. Click play below and enjoy some old-school skillful driving!

aw now THAT took me back!! In Australia in every capital city you get the Royal Show – it is such an entrenched way of life here that they have an official day off school during show week cos they know kids are going anyway. Every kid (and adult) goes every year – you’d be considered to be very weird if you didn’t go – and the two things you could not miss were the fireworks at the end, and the Holden precision driving team display…if you timed it right there were several performances each day, so you could twist your parents arm to see it a few times each day. (the driving display was free once you were in the show…) When we were a bit older, like early teenagers, we’d go hang around where they kept the cars and talk to the drivers, and check out the scrapes and dings where they didn’t get it quite right…but the absolute coolest bit was they used to stay at a Travellodge that was about two or three miles from the showground, and they’d drive the cars back to the motel each night – with open exhausts….on more than one occasion we’d be in the back of dads car leaving the show and they’d go roaring past on Goodwood road , wrong side of the road to avoid the masses leaving the show, and the first time I ever heard a car pop and crackle on the overrun was these 4 Monaros backing off as they hit South Terrace in the city….that sound raised the hairs on my neck and I can still remember it vividly about 9 or 10 years old. I’m sure that was a formative moment in my love of cars so thank you so much for sharing this clip!
