Historical Throwback: With Ads Like These, No Wonder The Mustang II Became A Parody

The Ford Mustang II seemed so promising, at first: a small car that took the Mustang name back to it’s small sporty car roots. Within a few years it was maligned as the worst version of the Mustang ever made and even today there is a bad vibe against the generational break between the early cars and the Foxes. I like them, they drive alright and with a hot little V8 can be a riot to drive. But if I was growing up when they were being sold and saw this, I would have avoided them like the plague, too.

I don’t know what caught me first about this television commercial for the Ford Mustang II: the lack of any discussion about an engine, the opening scene showing a Mustang II cruising along a dirt road (did everyone do that in the ’70s?) or the horrifying-to-my-ears soundtrack that is playing in the background. How do I get that noise out of my ears? And the announcer sounds way to excited for someone who is trying to sell a car. He sounds like someone getting ready to announce Lottery ticket winners, or someone who has to read the sponsors list at a wrestling match.

Check out the video and see for yourself. And remember, when you think of Mustang II, think…

sweet

I kinda have a sweet spot for the Mustang II, though I’m on the whole opposed to Ford ownership. They have a nice malaise era vibe, esp. the King Cobra. The old commercials are awesome. The funniest to me are the ones for the AMC Matador which literally ask: “What’s a Matador?” Talk about foreshadowing. I get asked that all the time. No doubt our kids will be on BS in 2030 talking about how hokey Dart commercials are.

I owned one of these back in the 70’s. It was a sporty POS with a OHC 6 banger that ate 2 cams.

Don’t you think…that anyone who ever drove a car with 13 x 5 1/2″ wheels…oughta wave to anyone else who did the same? Kind-of an old-guys club, like “we survived the seventies and we know why so many people were just smoking pot instead of being into cars” in that era. Still, I too kinda like the horrible little things, if not the advertising.
