Hulk Camino: This 1959 Chevrolet El Camino Might Polarize, But It’s Badass And Gets Driven…A Lot.

I watched the video. Then I watched it again, just because I wasn’t sure that I processed everything I saw correctly. I don’t want to call this a rat rod, because I think it does do a disservice to the builder in some fashion, but I don’t know what to call it…a “chop rod”? At some point this thing was a 1959 Chevrolet El Camino, the first year for the nameplate. What happened to it between when it rolled off of the Arlington, Texas line and what you see here must be one hell of a story. The purists are hoping that this was the only way to save a coupe utility that was just too far gone otherwise. The traditionalists are wondering where the rest of the Elky is and why this one got the chopsaw treatment. Argue amongst yourselves as you will. What we care about is the 800 horsepower, supercharged Dart block standing tall and proud in the engine bay. We like the fact that ITW Hot Rods, the shop behind the Hulk Camino, did more than just run with the patina look and hope for the best. We like the fact that the Elky has been on road trips, including on Route 66, and that it’s been raced on the strip ([email protected] MPH). In fact, there really is only one thing we could truly pick apart: why is the shifter on the roof, between the hatches?!

(Thanks to Charles Wickam for the tip!)

I’m 56 years old and always love the ’59s and I’m almost embarrassed to say I like this creation. So I’ll amp it up and just say I LOVE IT!

The firewall back is bitchin’ like an in progress custom, great lines, almost nice metal work.

The firewall forward looks like ass…

Just the other day I was musing that nobody builds radical hot rods anymore. Then this pops up.

Clearly they’ve got inspired by some of the more oddball hot wheels cars. Life imitating art?

There’s a few things I’d like to have seen done differently, but this thing is awesome. I love it

Either you get it or you don’t. The guy who built this got it. I wish some car company would see this video and learn a thing or two about disruptive design.

Beautifully designed and executed, Mad Max style.

Another cookie cutter junkrod just like all the other cobbled together fake patina junkrods.

There is zero originality left in the rod world.

    Sorry.

I saw this ride in Austin, Tx at the LonestarRoundup two weeks ago. The owner is a cool guy and the \’59 will scream. You have to see it in person to truly appreciate the effort.
