Without question, the Buick Grand National is one of the greatest performance cars ever produced by General Motors. During a rather moribund time in the performance history of the Buick brand, this car quietly crept onto the scene and slapped the Corvette around, something that no GM performance car has been allowed to do since. Film maker Andrew Filippone Jr. has released the trailer to his upcoming documentary about the super car no one saw coming called, Black Air: The Buick Grand National Documentary.
Filippone has an impressive roll of credits to his name and had worked with huge names like Metallica in the past. The two minute trailer, called “Misfit” features many prominent automotive personalities speaking about the car and how it was the polar opposite of everything else Buick was selling at the time.
Tough to judge off of one two minute clip, but this film looks like it is going to rule.

As I recall the GN was all about getting Buick on the Nascar circuit in a bigger way after they won the manufacturers championship for two years http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buick_Regal#Grand_National.2C_T-Type_and_GNX
I’ve owned one since I could afford one. It was the first car I bought when I graduated college. It was the first car you could lightly mod and run 11s at the track and cruise home with the a/c on while pulling 20mpg. It has sequential fuel injection before it was commonplace, and you had the option of ordering a limited regal and getting the GN drivetrain for ultimate sleeper status.
A bunch of my friends have them. They are all fast and truly and incredible car. A testament to the G-body platform.
My Turbo T was the first car I bought after graduating college, too. Most of my friends drove Mustang GT’s and TPI Iroc Z’s.They thought a V6 was no match for their small blocks.
I have owned mine since new in 87, also purchased 2 86’s over the years ( still have them) sadly my 48,000 mile baby was rear ended last week by a texting teenager, it will be repaired but never the same.
Currently down to 3 T/R’s; My cars were the terror of the county back in the day. Unfortunately, parts attrition has made them almost a risk to drive…Carry spare sensors and diagnostic tools to make a trip is not worth it any more, unless travelling with a group of GN’s and T-types. 🙁
My husband and I have had as many as 10 GN’s and Turbo-T’s, now down to only 5. They are awesome machines! One is a 9 sec street car and another is an 8 sec TSL car w/full metal body and working A/C. It is amazing what these cars can do with a little tweaking and a few upgrades. Can’t wait to see this documentary.
