Morning Symphony: World Touring Car Championship Practice – Small Family Cars On Kill!

If you’ve ever complained about how NASCAR drivers are too tame (regardless of how much blood comes out of Kurt Busch’s forehead) or that the cars that they race are nothing more than purpose-built shells with stickers telling you which manufacturer to root for, then Touring Car racing is right for you. There might be flares and spoilers, but there is no doubt that you are looking at a Chevy Cruze, a Volvo Polestar or any of the other cars that run in the series. And if you want driver attitudes…oh, boy, they’ve got them. For decades, there have been purposeful shunts off of the track, gestures that wouldn’t look out of place in New York City traffic, and fistfights that could compare with the best that the roundy-round boys can offer. And that’s before you account for such fun as flying cars and intentional (and blatant) wrecking. What this is isn’t a full-fledged touring car race. This is a test session at Monza that gives you the sound of these small family cars turned race missiles without the extras: no commentary, no irate driver, no thousands of people screaming as someone gets shoved into the gravel.
