Seeing This Mini Getting Launched Into The Air Makes Us Think Only One Thing: “That’s Gonna Hurt.”

Seeing This Mini Getting Launched Into The Air Makes Us Think Only One Thing: “That’s Gonna Hurt.”

Autograss racing sounds like a blast to us. Popular in the U.K. and Ireland, the basics are simple: there’s classes of cars that branch from mini-cars to V8-powered beasts, that race on a 400-meter oval track in a field somewhere. It’s fairly cheap, and there are junior classes for kids as young as twelve. While some of the more powerful classes can cost a mint to run, gutting a Ford Festiva that’s ready for the scrap heap, caging it and running it dead stock against others would be cheap and fun. What’s not to love?

Well, as with any other form of racing, the accidents. Tom Barnes and his friend Joe Vaudin were participating in a Class One (1,000cc or smaller) race with prepared Minis near York, England. The two had prepared these cars together and were doing well enough in the race, right up until the point where Barnes got into the back of Vaudin. Barnes’ Mini hit Vaudin, causing his Mini to spin into a T-bone accident while simultaneously starting a violent rollover that pops Barnes up into the air twice, the second time with a fair bit of altitude before coming down, first on the nose and finally on the side. Barnes escaped the crash with a bruised coccyx and whiplash and a newfound respect for gravity.
