Best of BS 2017: These Two-Wheel-Drive “Rail Buggy” Builds Are Sweet! Watch Them Climb A Wooded Hill Like A Goat!

We’ve shown you rockbouncers, the unhinged, V8-packing, by-any-means-necessary full exo-caged machines that turn off-roading into a combative sport, but it’s not the only show going on the trails of the South. These little monsters are “rail buggies”…take everything good about your average sandrail build, but beef everything up to survive the backwoods, and you’re good to go. So long as you have a smaller engine to keep things nice and light, these two-wheel-drive, rear-engined adult-sized go-karts look like a riot. The engine choices range from the predictable but solid old-school Volkswagen flat-four through late-model mills, like the EcoTec four-banger from GM or whatever else just happens to be ready to donate it’s running gear to a better cause. We suspect that one buggy is packing a V6 that got yanked from a later-model GM W-body from the sounds of it all…and the nice roostertail of dirt that it threw towards the adoring fans (and one irritated onlooker who must’ve gotten lost). They’re cheaper than a rockbouncer far and wide, and if you can weld, you might be able to put one of these together for less than a high-dollar UTV!
