There are few things that I find cooler than attachments that run off of tractors and equipment. From the old belt driven stuff hanging off the back of Ford tractors to dig post holes, run small mills, to the cool hydraulic pieces of today that simply plug and play, they are machines designed to solve problems, make work more efficient, and make the operator (or owner) more dough at the end of the day. Hey, most of human innovation is driven by the desire to make more profit and stuff like this unit in the video below is no different.

Firewood is pretty big business in northern climates that experience a season called, “winter”. During this “winter” things get mighty cold and people need to stay warm. I know several people who heat their homes with wood and wood alone although most people have oil or natural gas heat and then have a wood stove to supplement it or maybe they just burn wood in their fire place during the winter. Either way, by my house here in Massachusetts there are multiple places with mountains of split wood that they sell by the cord to home owners who don’t want to cut and split their own. For a business owner, the chopping and splitting of the logs is where the time and labor comes in. The quicker and safer that process can be made, the more profit the dude selling the wood can clear. Enter this genius contraption.

As you will see, this unit combines a grapple, a chainsaw, and a log splitter all in one awesome automated piece. The driver of the Bobcat goes to the log pile, snatches a log and then drives over to his pile of split wood. With controls inside the machine, the log feeds itself in front of the chainsaw to a predetermined length. The saw then comes down and lops off a piece, which is then forced into the anvil which is star shaped and spits the pieces out onto the pile of split wood. A whole tree trunk can be chopped and split in less than a minute and with no risk to human workers from an errant chain from the saw or blown hydraulic lines from a traditional splitter.

As I said above, I LOVE stuff like this. More proof that people are pretty flippin’ smart when we put our minds to solving problems. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to go chop something down.
