Video of the Week: 1970 Formula A Action from Lime Rock With Narration from James Garner

It’s 1970, James Garner was one of the coolest dudes on Earth, and
one of his screaming V8 open-wheel race cars is pounding the pavement at Lime
Rock. What could be better? That’s the action in this week’s Video of the Week pick.

James Garner, a total gearhead, and the owner of the featured entry in this vintage footage, does the just-cheesy-enough-to-be-totally-awesome narration job. The car struggles mightily, starting the race at the back of the pack and missing its rear wing, for reasons unstated. When the green flag drops, the car won’t fire up until the pack it roughly half a lap ahead.

These Formula A cars were pretty hairy rides with V8 power, no weight, and a penchant for trying to swap ends on an unsuspecting driver. With their motors nearly hanging out of the car and their drivers totally exposed for the fans to see them wrenching at the wheel, they make for great viewing.
