Video: How To Sell The Toyota Hilux Using A Lot Of Japanese Businessmen And A Gorilla

The Toyota Hilux is a world-renowned badass, known for it’s reliability and toughness, the likes of which have been tested over battlefields and damn near everything that Top Gear has ever been able to throw at one. They have a cult following, one well deserved. Even though we haven’t had a version of the Hilux in the U.S. since 1995 (the Tacoma is an entirely different truck) older Toyota trucks are still favored here as well.

Here in the U.S., to sell a truck, you do one of three things with your advertisements: Brag about what your truck can do, talk crap about what the other trucks can’t do, or show the truck taking all of the abuse it could possibly take. One ad that is forever in my memory is that of a Chevrolet dually romping in the mud while “Like A Rock” was playing. Simple and effective.

Toyota’s Hilux ad shown here…not so much. You can bet that Psy is probably looking to see if there is copyright infringement on the dance moves, while the music was done by the same beatwriter N*sync used. The costume is straight out of Harry and the Hendersons. This is Japan at it’s ultimate weirdness. Waku-doki is the adrenaline rush that one feels when they are about to do something that excites you. If peeing in the woods with your friends with a gorilla handy does that, more power to you. Not sure how that sells Toyotas, but hey, we aren’t professionals.

Click play below to watch this Hilux ad. And no, we’re not responsible for your therapy afterwards.
