Video: Spectacular Vintage Drags Film From the 1969 NHRA Nationals

One of the greatest things about the Internet is the preservation of a bunch of old film clips, which can presented for new generations to see. Below are three videos that comprise a Hurst movie called Tournament of Champions, covering the 1969 NHRA Nationals in Indy. You’ll see all the legendary dragsters, Super Stocks, Gassers, and Altereds, plus the historic moment when Don Prudhomme becomes the first driver to ever win the Nationals twice. It’s narrated by our hero, Steve Evans.

We can’t say it better than YouTube visitor dad19471, who wrote, “I was there in 69. Slept in the car for 3 nights. Party all night, go to
the races in the day. Hot as hell that year, showered at the carwash. No
2 cars were alike. No corp. stuff. Drivers drove like their lives
depended on winning each race. I loved the altereds & anglias. Hairy as hell. Not as fast as today but ten fold on the excitement. Et’s & speed records were constantly broken.”

You can relive that excitement with these videos. They are about 5 minutes each, in four parts.
