One of the most loved on, looked at, and drooled upon cars at the 2012 SEMA show was the Pure Vision built 1966 Martini T5-R Mustang. This creation from the mind of Steve Strope was a “what if” car that combined elements of vintage rally, road racing, and even Indy cars from the 1960s. The most fantastic piece of the puzzle is the Ed Pink built, 1960s vintage Ford Indy car engine that powers the machine.  To see it in the car and simply marvel at is coolness is one thing, but we’re going a whole lot better here. This is dyno video of that actual engine being spun up to 7,000 RPM on the pump for testing after it was built. Back when the car was raced, the red line was a stratospheric 9,000 RPM but for the purposes of this test and for no spreading unobtanium all over the dyno cell, the revs were held in check at a still glorious 7,000.

The displacement was enlarged to 292ci by Pink (we’re assuming with a bore job) and custom cams were designed to make the engine happy on the street. As the notes under the video state, the engine made 426hp at the 7,000 RPM cutoff and was still climbing. Peak torque of 362 lb/ft was made at 5200 RPM. Even cooler? Instead of the mechanical fuel injection it would have had in the 1960s, the engine is now being fed by a Holley Dominator EFI system. How bitchin’ is that?!

This is one hell of a way to kick off a Tuesday morning!

Press play below to hear the sounds of Indy past with this vintage Ford spinning to seven grand on the pump!

Love the Car . Love the choice of motor . Love the motor out of the car [ and the sound ] as much as I love the motor in it . Damn ! If that Martini Mustang isn’t the absolute , hands down , all time best Muscle Car of the century done right …. then I don’t know what the ___ is !

Feel free to do another feature [ or ten ] on the car there BangShift . Its well worth revisiting … a few hundred times or more 😉

The only negative thing about the car ? The fact that Ford could of done this themselves back in the day …. should of in fact … but never did . Another example of what could of been ….. if only …. sigh ……

    Doesn’t really sound much different than an uncorked 5.0 Coyote . . . . (which, pushrod-worshipers, isn’t a bad thing)

EFI is great and all…….does anyone still know how to work on a carb…..I feel like a little part of me is dying with each EFI swap
