Friday BOOM: Watch a Canadian Drag Racer Suffer A Massive Nitrous Explosion at The Grand Bend Motorplex

If nitrous explosions are judged on shrapnel and how high stuff flies, particularly chunks of the hood scoop, this one may be a hall of famer. The video shows a pair of Top Sportsman cars launching off on the strip at the Grand Bend Motorplex up in Canada. This is a track I am intimately familiar with, having announced several IHRA events there. The place is fast and the local competition up there is really stiff. Basically, these guys had the guns loaded for bear.

The driver in the near lane hits the loud pedal, gets about 30′ down the strip and then launches shards of fiberglass hood scoop into low Earth orbit. There are pieces of the scoop still falling from the sky FOUR SECONDS LATER! It looks like Dick Dastardly stuffed C4 into the scoop and hit the button while tweaking his mustache. The action starts at 1:20, so skip ahead to there and duck!

SKIP AHEAD TO THE 1:20 MARK OF THE VIDEO TO SEE THE CAR LAUNCH AND EXPLODE IN SPECTACULAR FASHION!

Anybody Guess what malfunction that was? Id like to know, putting Nitrous on my own drag car soon.

I like when the announcer calls “Super bikes and sleds” to the lanes. You don’t hear that very often. I have seen the sleds do exhibition runs. Amazingly quick.
